Before long, all the other bats smelled the blood and began questioning him about where he got it. He was tired and wanted some sleep, so he asked them to please leave him alone. But they continued quizzing him, and it became obvious that he wouldn’t be getting any sleep until he had satisfied their curiosity.

“Alright” he said, not bothering to hide his exasperation, “follow me,” and he flew out of the cave with hundreds of bats right behind him.

Down through the valley they went, across the river and deep into the forest. Finally he slowed down, and all the other bats gathered around him with great excitement.

“Do you see that big tree over there?” he asked.

“Yes, yes, yes, we see it, we see it,” the bats all yelled in a frenzy of excitement and anticipation.

“Good,” said the first bat, “because I DIDN’T!”
