It is almost trick or treat time again, and soon there will be kids in costumes all over the place. Halloween is a great time for children and fun for adults too, but remember that there is nothing in that bag of goodies that your pets should be eating.

The two biggest offenders your pet might find in there are chocolate and raisins. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two ingredients that are stimulants and diuretics. Eating too much chocolate can cause accelerated and irregular heartbeat in animals, which can be fatal, as well as diarrhea and increased urination, leading to dehydration.

Everyone love Mom’s homemade treats, whether it is chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake or anything else made with chocolate, but baker’s chocolate is the most dangerous kind for animals as it contains the most theobromine. Anyone with cats knows how quickly they can be on a counter when there is food out, and bigger dogs have been known to "counter surf", so never leave baker’s chocolate where they can get at it, even for a second.

Raisins are a healthy snack for humans, and health conscious adults may choose to drop a small box of them in the treat bag instead of a candy bar, although doing so may earn you a dirty look from the little goblin. But what the heck, you can’t see the face behind the mask so who cares. Those raisins can be deadly for a dog, and have caused kidney failure in numerous cases.

Let the kids have a good time, but keep the goodies safely away from the pets.
